Wright State came into Credit Union 1 Arena this past weekend and took care of business against UIC, showcasing its stout defense that ranks #30 according to KenPom. The Flames offense struggled mightily as Maurice Commander was the only player to score in double-figures both games. UIC (8-9, 5-7) also had issues defending Loudon Love, who registered two double-doubles, and Grant Basile as the duo did plenty of damage in the paint.
Commander Continues Strong Play
The junior transfer from Chattanooga has settled into a groove as a capable ball-handler who can play on or off the ball, an important trait considering the presence of Teyvion Kirk. These are Commander’s statistics during Horizon League play (8 games):
12.3 points, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steals, 1.0 turnover in 34.3 minutes
47.2 3fg% on 4.5 attempts per game
Commander has scored in double-figures the past five games and was UIC’s most consistent offense against Wright State. Kirk has been a strong emphasis of opponent’s game plan against UIC, which has allowed Commander to be more aggressive. Teams swarm the paint on Kirk drives and work to limit his close shot opportunities. Against Wright State, Commander played more on the ball than he has up to this point and delivered. He doesn’t generate as many assists as Kirk, but he is a much better as a shooter across the board. The next step for Commander will creating scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Diggins Capping Career On High Note
Senior Michael Diggins has always showed potential thanks to his athleticism and shooting touch and he’s finally become a double-digit scorer. Currently averaging 11.3 points and 5.9 rebounds, Diggins was UIC’s leading scorer in the second set against Wright State with 16 points.
Head coach Luke Yaklich has empowered Diggins to grab defensive rebounds and push the ball himself, which has led to some easy points and plays to Diggins strength: his athleticism. Diggins is always a lob threat thanks to his verticality, and he is able to hit a three here and there at a rate (31%) that defenses respect. Diggins also keeps the ball moving and can create scoring opportunities for his teammates (1.9 assists per game). As his career approaches an end, Diggins is playing his best at a much needed time. The Flames enter a crucial stretch with upcoming games against Green Bay and IUPUI, two teams below UIC in the standings. If UIC can sweep both opponents, its conference record improves to 9-7. How well Diggins plays as a complementary player will go a long way in UIC finishing the season strong.
